Patterns of coral spawning… looking closer

I’m designing a multipurpose underwater camera specifically designed to monitor coral colonies for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of broadcast and brooding activates in scleractinian and gonochoric species in general.

This solution may allow us to review the following research areas:

  • Documentation of how quickly new coral recruits generate planula larva
  • How often individual polyps release planula
  • What percentages of a colony release planula during mass spawning periods
  • How long the release takes at species level
  • Document regularity of planula release with ecological data such as temperature and moonlight cycle for brooders
  • Does spawning occur more frequently in some species yet we miss the event when not present to document
  • Document how synchronous spawning events are with multiple sentinel units and exactly what the environmental conditions are with highly accurate reading using lab certified sensors
  • Using these sensors and cameras it may be possible to research asynchronous spawning in further detail over a larger geographic area
  • Monitor difference in spawning at depth, inshore and offshore in detail with precise timing
  • Clearly document spawning synchrony and gametogenic cycle over seasons with individual species
  • Long terms studies as to how climate change affects these cycle
